Opening — What Formalization Can and Cannot Do
A philosophy becomes more rigorous when it makes its commitments visible. It names the assumptions from which it begins. It clarifies the meanings of its central terms. It distinguishes what has been recognized from what has been inferred, what has been proposed from what has been established, and what follows from a claim from what has merely been associated with it. It allows readers to ask where a conclusion came from, what would have to be accepted for it to hold, and which part of the argument would need revision if the conclusion proved inadequate.
